HUNTERSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA · FEATURED PROJECT
This Huntersville backyard brings swimming, lounging and gathering together around a large freeform pool. A raised circular spa, fire-and-water bowls and a waterfall give the water its own focal points, while Turkish Carrara marble and a contrasting paver border carry the design across the patio.
H2O-Matic Pool and Patio also planned ahead with the homeowner, preparing footings for his DIY louvered pergola and a gas stub for a future outdoor kitchen. The finished pool area and the provisions for later work were considered together.
The freeform outline gives the water a softer shape than a rectangular pool. Within that outline, several distinct areas provide different ways to enjoy the space: a tanning ledge for shallow-water lounging, built-in benches and a dedicated seating area with a table.
These features make seating part of the pool itself. The shallow shelf has room for the two in-water loungers shown in the project photographs, while the benches and table create other places to gather without leaving the water.
The seven-foot spa rises above the pool and connects to it through a three-foot spillover. Its circular shape complements the curves of the pool, and the raised position makes it a prominent feature from the surrounding patio.
Tundra Gray veneer panels finish the spa’s exterior. That vertical stone surface provides a different texture beside the Turkish Carrara marble deck and the blue tones at the waterline.
Two fire-and-water bowls sit along the raised rear beam, with a two-foot sheer descent between them. The bowls combine visible flames with streams of water, while the central waterfall adds a broader sheet of moving water.
The evening photographs show how these features change the pool after sunset. Flames sit above the waterline, colored underwater lighting defines the pool and spa, and the waterfall remains a clear focal point across the water. Daylight images show the same details against the stone and marble without the nighttime lighting effects.
The patio uses Turkish Carrara marble, framed by Techo-Bloc Villagio pavers in Shale Gray. The border gives the pale marble a contrasting edge and defines the transition around the patio.
HIDE skimmer covers were included to help the skimmer access points blend into the deck design. These smaller details matter alongside the larger features: the paving, border and access covers all contribute to the appearance of the finished pool surround.
The interior finish is Aqua White with Puerto Rico Blend. Blue Seas Light Blue waterline tile adds a distinct band around the pool, bringing another blue tone into the composition.
Together, the interior finish, waterline tile, Tundra Gray spa panels, Turkish Carrara marble and Shale Gray paver border establish the project’s material palette. Each finish has its own location and purpose rather than appearing as an unrelated accent.
The homeowner built the louvered pergola, with footings prepared by H2O-Matic. A gas stub provides for a future outdoor kitchen.
For a backyard that will develop in stages, discussing future features during the pool project helps identify where preparation is needed. The photographs show the homeowner’s pergola dining area alongside the completed pool, with warm lighting outlining the structure after sunset.
Use the features in this project as a starting point for your own priorities. A raised spa, shallow lounging area, in-pool seating and patio gathering space can each play a different role in the way you use your backyard.
