Rick Battaglia with H2O-Matic Irrigation & Landscaping has trained extensively in both classroom and on-site with internationally known Certified Master Water Feature Specialist and Best-Selling Author, Rick Bartel. During this training, Rick Bartel shared during these instructional periods; the R.I.S.E. Method to Water Feature Design. R.I.S.E. stands for Random, Irregular, Spontaneous and Erratic. This training allows H2O, to create natural water features that appear like they were there from the beginning of time! We don’t install features that look symmetrical or surround an area with river rocks and have water flow within, we install natural looking features just as nature does.
Pondless Water Feature
“Pondless Waterfalls” are simply a re-circulating water that typically includes a waterfall and may include a stream, without a pond. This allows you to enjoy the sights and sound of running water, without the high maintenance of a pond. The waterfall and streams are the most beautiful parts of any water feature. Safety is another reason for a “Pondless” feature. Because there is no pool of water, a “Pondless Water Feature is a great option if you are concerned about safety issues associated with a traditional pond.
A reservoir is dug then lined with rock and gravel, and filled with water. The water is then circulated from beneath the rocks and gravel by a pump that sits on the bottom, inside an enclosure also known as a Pump Vault. A pipe runs from there up to the top of the stream or falls where it works its way back into the reservoir. Since the water level never rises above the level of the rock and gravel fill, it gives the appearance of a waterfall without a pond, when in fact, the pond is there but not visible.

Water Circulators provide valuable benefits to you in every season of the year. During the summer months, they are used to mix and agitate stagnant water to help reduce aquatic plant growth and inhibit mosquito reproduction. In the spring and fall, the can help reduce thermal stratification in deeper bodies of water to help prevent or limit the negative effects of pond turnover. Finally, in the winter months, Water Circulators can be used to keep areas of water open to help prevent winterkill on fish populations and protect permanent structures from ice damage.
Water circulators are ideal for creating directional water flow in your pond or lake. This transforms still, stagnant water into a stream environment and helps add vital oxygen. Still, stagnant water promotes the growth of unwanted surface and bottom vegetation such as algae. By eliminating the stagnant water, the water circulators help limit the growth of the unwanted aquatic plants and keep your pond cleaner.
Stagnant water contributes to rapid mosquito reproduction, including those that may carry the West Nile Virus. Creating a stream environment helps limit mosquito reproduction and thereby helps control the overall population of mosquitoes in your area.
